I had received this book from Booksneeze to read and review some time ago and amongst all the moving and going back to work full-time, I have finally finished it.
I Am Hutterite
The Fascinating True Story of a Young Woman's Journey to reclaim Her Heritage
By Mary-Ann Kirkby
Book Description
A fascinating journey into the heart and culture of a reclusive religious community.
I Am Hutterite takes readers into the hidden heart of the little-known Hutterite colony where author Mary-Ann Kirkby spent her childhood. When she was ten, her parents packed up their seven children and a handful of possessions and left the colony to start a new life. Overnight they were thrust into a world they didn't understand, a world that did not understand them.
With great humor, Kirkby describes how she adapted to popular culture, and with raw honesty she describes her family's deep sense of loss for their community. More than a history lesson, I Am Hutterite is a powerful tale of retracing steps and understanding how our beginnings often define us.
Now, this book was very interesting and taught me the life of a hutterite but the book stated it was a
"The Fascinating True Story of a Young Woman's Journey to reclaim Her Heritage"
and, as it did talk about her move with her Family and so on, it focused more on her Family's historical and cultural roots. I think I would have enjoyed the book even more and stayed more interested in the book if it kept with the story of her life after leaving the colony, and what happened between running away and her adulthood! I did enjoy the book, but with the back story and transitions, I did get a little lost. I may need to just read the book again, sometimes a second time through is better and you catch things you missed the first time.
If you are interested in learning about other cultures, I know you would truly enjoy this book, and now is your chance to do so. I have a copy of the book to give away to oe of my luck readers.
